Captain Doty WebAR Journey

Roles:
Conceptual Designer, Art Style, 3D modeling, Developer, UI Design
Project Timeline:
1 Month
Overview:
Celebrate 8th Wall joining Niantic by going on a WebAR journey here with Niantic's adorable yeti, Captain Doty!

This experience was developed to not only highlight 8th Wall joining Niantic but also to add an interactive experience to customers on the 8th Wall home website. This empowers users to have an immersive and fun experience while learning about what the 8th Wall Software offers.

Initial Conceptualization
The product team envisioned 3 words that best described what 8th Wall software has to offer. Reach, Freedom and Power.

Reach: Cross Platform, Cross Device, No app

Freedom: Embed, link, or scan QR code, Custom domains

Power: 8th Wall engine, Cloud Editor, Built-in hosting
Initial Design
Taking the themes of Reach, Freedom and Power, We then began to design & develop interactive experiences that correlated with each word.

The user would lead the experience by moving Doty and interacting with zones and objects. (These diagrams were created and rendered in Blender)

Real-Time Physics & Testing
The experience includes Real-time physics which uses the ammo.js physics engine. We included a kinematic collider on the Doty character and dynamic colliders on the objects in the scene. This way Doty is able to walk around and interact/move objects in real-time.

We tested and included logic which would turn on/off gravity when Doty would come in a certain proximity of the 3 zones on the ground of the playing area.
Final Experience
The experience was deployed when 8th Wall announced it was joining the Niantic team. It can be played on mobile devices, desktop 3D and VR headsets.

The final design included real-time physics, baked force field animations and character joystick movement controls.

Here is a video of the experience in front of my house :)
